The current and future leadership are in a tough spot. Keep the thumb on the scale and stay in “power”, or take your thumb off the scale and discover if you are true leader or not.

Reminds me of the sixties lyrics, “If you love something, let it go. If it returns, it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it wasn’t.”

Under the rule of the gavel as the NM GOP SSC operates the members can not bring up such a motion as they would never be recognized by the chair to do so. I agree that this is something that should happen. There should be a cool down period where we see what worked and what did not before making choices like this. But as the rules are now that can not happen. It would take getting a chairperson in office that was willing to change the rules and reduce there power to do so.

From the dominant take of political observers, it appears that Richard Stephens' below answer to your question is correct: the GOP leadership election is being held today because it is more likely to result in the current leadership holding power. "He who holds the power makes the rules."
